One of my favorite things about trading is that while many things and principles remain the same over time, there are always new things. I always try to carry something to write on along with a pen no matter where I go so that if I see or hear something unique that can affect my trading, I take note of it. One of those things is going to happen next week. Out of the corner of my right ear, I heard a commercial for CNBC in which they indicated that “Mad Money” would be on at 12PM and “Fast Money” at 12:30PM. These are the CNBC shows that come on at 6PM and 5PM respectively and tend to be very profitable for very quick trades many times. Well, the fact that these things will be on during lunch time could be a potential boon for smart day traders as many more eyeballs will be on these shows than normal. Jim Cramer could say “buy shares of XYZ” and the stock could see a spike in not only price, but volume as liquidity is present at 12PM that is oftentimes not present at 6PM. So, take away two things. First, be very careful yet mentally prepared for that time frame next week. This is a very unusual happenstance and it will be quite interesting to see if as many individual stocks are discussed. Second, I circle back to the first sentence for a more macro theme. This is not purely a game of numbers and letters. Trading is a game of creative thought and getting an edge. Whenever you hear of something that not many people realize and you have a unique take on, really think about it. Oftentimes, that can make a difference in your trading day if not trading week and month.
Markets in Asia were higher overnight; Tokyo was closed, but Hong Kong finished ahead 1.9%. In Europe, prices were higher earlier but have gotten softer as the day has progressed with London still up ½%, but Germany and Paris ostensibly unchanged. Oil is a tinge higher and the dollar is weaker. The big news of the morning thus far has been the fact that the EU ministers announced that a deal was reached on Greece. Yet, there have been no details released. Futures are marginally higher. Look for a relatively slow day as we approach a holiday weekend following a commute many Northeasterners chose not to make this morning. Trading will be focused on the few earnings plays, the deals out there, and relative strength/weakness as the morning progresses.
